Fussy Fights the Frump- The Eyes Have It!

Fight_the_frump_logo

Y'all know I'm a Southern gal. We southerners have strange traditions: moon pies, an affinity for wearing bright colors, and a strange love of all hair & beauty products. I lean toward the heavy handed in my love for beauty products, but I try to control myself!

I'm not quite in this cast yet...

Steelmagnolias

I love putting on make-up. I heat up my trusty eyelash curler, and I am good to go!

This edition of fight the frump is all about the eyes -the good, the bad & the ugly!

Did you know husband's often report that their wives eyes are are their favorite and most beautiful part of their wives? And all this time I thought Mr. Smartypants was a breast man! (I see you shaking your head, Miss Thing. I'm a married woman, I can too say that! How'd you think I ended up with five kids? )

First let's explore the ugly-

Every spring we are inundated with "spring fashion forecasts". Be strong, Friends of Fussy, do not be tricked into buying new crap shades!

The smokey eye looks so sexy on the celebrities, I know, I know. Let's face the truth, it won't work in real life.

If you saw your friend, Betty Lou, with black liner all over her face, buying diapers and jumbo tube socks at Target -wouldn't you giggle?

I can achieve the same look at 5am when I was too lazy didn't remove my mascara the night before. It ain't pretty, friends!

Finally, colors -just say no to bright colors. The evil, sent by the devil himself, cosmetic marketers will tell us that a certain shade accentuates our eye color. Lies, lies and more lies! Cover your ears and run to your neutrals for cover!

Now, the Beautiful-

Here's a Fussy-approved tutorial on eye make-up

If you are like me riddled with ADD unable to follow written directions and prefer video, you'll like the tutorial!

Of course, Friends of Fussy, you are beautiful without any make up I'm sure. How do I know? I see you reading the blog everyday! ~waves~ Hi, I see you!

This is one of my all-time favorite YouTube videos. It is the evolution of beauty and photoshop from Dove. I promise you'll like it!

I have to disagree; I LOVE wild color! But only for 'going out', and even then, it's always a rad, punky color and not frosted pastels.

I will have to try your eyelash curler trick, though, because mine just doesn't cut it as is.

Crap! Do I really have to throw away my oranges and yellows? Really, with my hair and freckles, we don't do anything but brown.

They played that Dove video at my daughter's school - in her after-school "girl's group," which is a self-esteem yeah smart-girls kinda group... it REALLY had an impact on her...round of applause for Dove!!! But makeup? what's that? I LOVE it too...even sell it...but haven't been able to consistently wear it since my son was born...ummm...3 months ago? I need makeup and shower time - please tell me soon the kids will be in a routine that allows me to do that! =-)

My best friend used to be a make up artist and kept trying to convince me I needed a little "color" for my eyes. She kept pushing purple on me, finally I relented, and I do have to say WOW!! Of course I only wear makeup twice a year...
Oh and I so saw that lady in Target the other day, only she had a big black bow on her HEADBAND too!! I would love to know what people are thinking!

I rarely wear make up anymore, but even I know bright is bad and raccoon eyes, they went out in the what 70s. At least I am able to eat with this post. Yesterday's post helped my "diet" right along.

If only you had posted this BEFORE I spent a fortune on neon green and pink eye shadow. Darn it.

Thanks for this post! I know that I look 150% better if I just put on mascara and eyeliner for the day. Of course, if I'm going to that much trouble, might as well do the whole shebang, huh? LOL!

Due to the shodow colors I prefer, I end up with a toned-down version of the smoky eye look. Not quite so extreme as the crazy looks the models sport.

Melody

I'm with you. I keep it neutral. Brown eyeliner, muted soft brown or cream colored shadows and black brown mascara! MUST have the eyelash curler!!!! The frosted colors and raccoon eyes look gorgeous on the celebs, but really... my friends would slap me upside the head after they were done laughing if they saw me trolling they aisles of Tar-jay with that muck on. Of course, that's if I put make-up on at all. I think mine currently has cobwebs on it. Yikes.
That video was fantastic! Thanks for the frump fighting! Now, you know you aren't allowed to have maternity leave, right? What would I do without my Alli?

Okay, you have been feed reader subscribed. I am now available in feedervision and I finally sorta kinda have it figured out so I finally subscribed. Proud of me? good. My life is now complete.
Smooches!

Loved this post! Much better than your last one LOL ;)
I started wearing eye makeup about 2 years ago. What a difference it has made. My eyes are deep set and my lashes are very blonde. But with a little mascara and shadow you can actually see them. I usually use light brown shadow. But I also have a green shadow. I will put a light layer of brown over the green. It gives a very subtle greenish hue that does not scream GREEN!

As a SAHM, I don't have time for this kind of stuff. I'm so busy cleaning up baby snot and dog pee that I don't have time to look gorgeous.

Oh, wait. I do have time. It must be the inclination that I lack. But I prefer neutrals anyway, that way it's not as noticeable when I do make myself up. I don't want to spaz the family out or anything.

I love that dove video...you can see a bunch more like that if you search for "photoshop makeover" on youtube. Some of them are just too crazy!

My best friend is an artist for MAC cosmetics. She can do some brilliant things with shadow and brushes. If I want to get all dolled up, I just put the makeup down and drive over to her place.

Then I'm guaranteed not to look like a clown.

i wear a ton of purples and plums when it comes to eyeshadows. with my green eyes, it works GREAT...but i needed someone at MAC to tell me this ;)

I have a girlfriend in Rhode Island (Wassup Boozeys!) who always wears purples, and she looks absolutely gorgeous!

With my pasty Irish girl skin & very blonde hair, I would look like a cross between Tammy Faye and Dolly Parton! ;)

I'm sticking to the neutrals & my hot eyelash curler.

Hmmmm, I need to get a friend who is a MAC girl!

MWAH, Alli

Fussy, I wanted to tell you that since your frump fighting a few weeks back, I have committed to not walking out the door without at least a little makeup. Thanks. You make me even hotter looking. :)

Brilliant, brilliant video. The more people who see this, the better. Nice one for sharing this!

You know we're all sleep deprived moms, right, Fussy? I feel glam if I manage to even wash my face.

the first time i saw this video, i had to show it to every woman i knew...it's just so amazing to see the reality of these woman we put on pedestals...the woman we think we should look like, but never will...because they don't exist in reality!

thanks for the tips. i've got to admit, i haven't worn much makeup the past few years. well...i draw my eyebrows (brown eye pencil) and eyelashes (a black liner line) on, but that's because i don't have any, so i don't consider it makeup so much making myself even with the non-baldies! ;-)

I don't wear makeup but my 4 year old was reading over my shoulder and he thinks the rainbow eye look is "pretty." He'll just have to see it on the computer because this mommy is all about the neutral colors.

Must remember to fight the frump! Oh wait I have been extremely good at doing so the last two weeks. Yay me! ;)

Love the rainbow look! Whenever I "fight the frump," my kids ask me where we are going today. Oh the shame. Our charter school sent me this site to pass on to other homeschoolers, to show positive homeschool messages in the media, so here you go;. Keep it up, Fussy...we need you!

Ooops. the site didnt show up. It was an article on Star telegram about a homeschooler's high SAT scores, got him a free ride to college. If anyone is interested.

BFOTI, you are a rockstar.

But those photoshoppers in that video could learn from YOU!

Mwah!

Love it! I am slowly learning to overcome my low maintenance tendencies and finding that with all the boys in the house...I am obsessed with pretty and pink. Thanks for the advice.

I'm wondering how our distorted idea of beauty plays into the fact that America is fat??

Just wondering....

Hmmmmm.

Oh yeah . . . the old eyelash curler, I'd forgotten all about it in the bottom of my make-up case!

Loved the Dove ad...Kudos to them! Thanks for showing it...I hadn't seen it.

I use that Dove video with my girls lunch group (middle schoolers) when we talk about self-esteem, etc... They always love it!! Good choice.

I love that Dove video. I've seen other ones like it but not that one before.

You think I'm beautiful??? Awww....Fussy, you just made my day!!!! :-) I think I've just found another reason to LOVE blogs and blogging! ;-)

I am so happy to have found this treasure trove (is that right?) of information. i'm sure my entire family will want to thank you. help me....
