I prefer all going the same way, up or down doesn't really matter. Or does it? I'm sure that we could argue that utensil part up handle down is correct because then hands are touching handles and not spreading germs to the part that goes in your mouth? I can't wait to see what others come up with.

Pointy (knives and forks) down, and spoons up. That way you don't hurt yourself when you unload, and the bottom of the basket doesn't get too crowded. And thus not clean the utensiles as well.

Thanks for the linky love, BFOTI. I dig that post, too!

Martha says to alternate, and so that is what I do. Because I FOLLOW DIRECTIONS ;)

It's not the hair or the lipstick, I think it's the amazing sense of accomplishment. Thanks for noticing! ;)

Love ya, Fuss.

Awww, thanks! But you should find another recipient for your fabulous maternity wardrobe...I'm already bigger than you were 9 months pregnant.

Ack!

And apparently I *don't* follow directions b/c I didn't answer the question...

I alternate because I can't be bothered to care. How's that? I didn't know "git her done" was called "alternate".

I prefer all down. first, I don't want to get stabbed by a knife or fork. Second, I don't want germs on the part I put in my mouth.

Thanks for noticing the hair! You're so thoughtful!

All up. I don't think I knew or remembered that it could go down until now. But then in my house I had a conversation last night that reviewed that the napkin should go on your lap. Seems no-one wanted to put it there including my husband. So I did the best I could and said it's one thing not to know that it should be on your lap it's another to know and not do it.

I'd rather they know and not do it. That way when they are invited to lunch with President Obama they will know the rules!

All facing down so that when you grab them out once clean you will not dirty the part you put in your mouth with your hand germs.

ALWAYS put the knives facing down. And the forks if they're especially pointy. Here's a good story which illustrates why this is so important.

When my BF's little sister was about a year old, their mom left the dishwasher open for a couple minutes to go check on some calamity that was happening in the other room. While she was gone, the little sister crawled into the dishwasher, and got a steak knife stuck in her abdomen. The only reason she's still alive is because their Dad was a doctor, and knew that they had to leave the knife in while she went to the hospital so she didn't bleed out. So next time you're considering which way to put the knives in, definitely go with pointing down.

Ive always placed them handles up, but have recently read that placing knives down and forks up gets them cleaner..I'm not sure really why that is.

Alternate, per Martha. She says it won't get clean otherwise and I have this paranoid fantasy that she may run out of gas one day in front of my house and empty my dishwasher.

Well, my dishwasher has a flat tray and so all my silverwear kinda lounge on their sides in little divider prongs! Isn't that lovely? and they all get so perfectly clean this way!

Thanks for noticing my look this week- have been making an effort and I see it is paying off already!

In the diswasher? All UP. In the drawer they lay flat.

~blush~ thanks for noticing my new look. It is cute isn't it?!

How about "in the dishwasher?" Up/Down, sideways, as long as they make it in there, and then out when the cycle is done? That's my goal.

It's mixed in our house... forks and knives head up, spoons and child/baby silverware head down/handle up. Or else they slip between the holes in the silverware basket and cause a hassle with the tray sliding in...

Sharp knives down, everything else up.

Knives down, Forks and spoons up so that they don't get nestle into each other and they get clean.

Ooo! I know the answer to this one! Flatware (Stainless or Sterling) should be stored tines/bowl up to prevent warping over time. The stress of upside down storage can cause bent tines on forks and odd angles to the spoons. The only exception is Silver Plated flatware which is stored tines/bowl down to prevent rub spots or loss of plate on the back. I personally store my silver plated flatware in separate baggies right side up. This stops both rubs and warping. Trust me. I'm the Silver Queen.

Wait? Are you talking about loading the dishwasher? If so, ignore my methods for storing flatware. No wait. Read them anyway. Just 'cause.

ALL UP! In the drawer. And if you're talking dishwasher... *I* am the dishwasher, so can't help you there!

Steph

My 9 yr old loads the dishwasher (7 yr old unloads ) and we find utensils all over the dishwasher. ugh!

Ha, ha. I had to comment on the silverware. Some Up, Some Down. Also mix and match knives, spoons, and forks in various divisions of basket. Reason being: If they are all down or all up, they tend to fit into each other. If two spoons or two forks get in there where they are fitting into each other, they will not get clean.

Knives all up, spoons all up, small forks down, and big forks up. Kinda confusing, huh?

Assuming you mean in the dishwasher....I always put them prongs down since SIL told a story about a child who was playing & fell on something sticking out of the dishwasher. Could have been an internet rumor, but it was enough to scar me for life. It's not worth the chance!

Everything up, because eeeeeeeewwwwwwww, what's down there? Sharp knives I either point down or lay on the drainboard.

I'm definitely a down person in the dishwasher (I don't want to touch the part you eat from when I'm taking them out - yes... my hands are clean, but still...) .... In the drawer, they're on their sides.

All up. And keep spoons intermingled with forks so the spoons don't spoon the other spoons and end up with gunk between the two of them.

I have to agree with Alli... we alternate to avoid what we call "nesting" of the silverware. I grew tired of finding two spoons or forks nested together with dried food crusted between them. YUCK!

All silverware DOWN for crying out loud... otherwise germy hands will be touching the ends we put in our mouths while unloading the dishwasher and putting them away. Gives me the willies.

And to take it one step further... one must separate the silverware so that they are evenly dispersed... spoons too close together lead to unclean dishes at the end of the cycle.

... And that ends my rant.

Cheers!
Jamie
